"Prayer of Mother Mary - A Miracle in NAGASAKI -"

What kind of play is "Prayer of Mother Mary - A Miracle in NAGASAKI -"?

This play starts from the scene that University students, Mary and Yousuke visit Nagasaki on their summer vacation. After that, the story expand to other two periods, Edo Period under Christianity prohibition, and Showa Period experiencing atomic bombs. And Mary and Yousuke encountered a female Rie sitting on a wheelchair. Then an unexpected event was waiting for them in exotic Nagasaki.

Why are you performing this play?

Nagasaki is the place where there is close connection with Christianity. In Edo Period, Christianity was prohibited and the Shogunate strictly suppress it in Nagasaki. However, the believers who escaped from the suppression handed over the faith in Christianity. Over Nagasaki having such history, an atomic bomb was dropped after Hiroshima. On the believers of Christianity, the same Christian dropped an atomic bomb. That was a painful experience, however we believe that we humans can learn something out of it for making peaceful future of Earth. This is the reason why we are performing this play.

What kind of message would you like to convey in this play?

We humans on Earth are sharing the destiny on the same Earth. However, people are now fighting each other due to the difference between races, ethnic groups, religions and ideologies. Thanks to the sacrifice of many people in wars, atomic bombing and other incidents, we could learn the folly among them. If we are on the same standpoint that originally we were born on the same Earth, and we are one family and friends getting on the same "Spaceship Earth", we can respect and harmonize each other. We are sending such message through our play.

What was the difficulty you faced when producing this play?

There was no actors and actresses who came from Nagasaki. So speaking Nagasaki dialect was a tough experience. We had to find dialect teachers coming from Nagasaki through the personal connection of our friends. Also another tough point was that since there was no members who knew Christianity well, we had to start learning Christianity and history of Nagasaki by actually visiting churches in Nagasaki, reading books and searching through Internet. We are placing importance on emotions of people who suffered from the atomic bombing when we perform the play.

Message from the IAPG Founder, Noriko Inamori

When we stand on the understanding that we are brothers and sisters who are given lives and brought up by the earth, and we are the ones sharing the same destiny boarded on the starship "Earth" at the same age, the earth is the one which resembles a mother, and which we have to take good care of.

However, we have been always hurting the earth, haven't we? Environmental destructions caused the water pollution, air pollution, and further soil pollution. Recently, there is a nation being blamed for the water pollution, but the water is really the body fluids of the earth and the source of life.
